We finally white washed our house! I absolutely LOVE it! I actually wanted to do a slurry brick whenever we built, but Grant liked more of the contrast that we chose.  I figured we could always add the wash later, and that’s exactly what we did!  Scroll before for before, during and after photos s I answer a lot of questions at the bottom of this blog post for all of y’all who have asked!

The photo comparison below is something I edited myself to show Grant the closest final outcome I could come up with visually!

And now for the final outcome…

Who Did we Use?

We used Frankie Summerlin, owner of FDS Masonry.  He is the one who did all the brick and stone on our home when we built it 3 years ago.  He doesn’t have a website, but his email is fdsmasonry@gmail.com and his phone number is 979.412.3674.

What Color Did We Wash It?

We didn’t wash it a particular paint color, it is the brick mortar that was washed and smeared all over the previous exterior brick of the home.  The mortar that Frankie’s crew used was basically a white.  (If you call him and use him for your upcoming project, just mention our home and he will know!)

How Long Did It Take?

For our house, he had a crew work for 2.5 days.  Keep in mind we washed BOTH the brick AND the stone.  We did all the exterior of our home, the exterior fireplace, the front steps and all the stone around the flower beds.  It was quite a big job!

What is This Technique Called?

I personally think this can be called a number of things.  White washing or German Schmear would be the most common terms.  Basically they used a water hose to literally wash the brick and stone, smeared all the wet mortar over it and then used carpet pieces (as well as brooms) to expose a little of the previous brick color that was beneath.  This was based on my own personal request because I wanted texture and dimension from the bottom layer color, rather than just a solid wash.

How Fast Does It Dry?

I would say it dries within the day.  Do not freak out about the color or dimension you see when they first start washing.  It dries lighter and the color underneath shows through more as it continues to dry.  Just like paint, you’ve got to let it dry before you see the final outcome.

What is Our Brick Color?

The name is Sheltered Bluff.

Did We Also Wash the Exterior Stone?

Yes!  By using the same method/technique as the brick!  We did have the front steps and the stone around the flower beds pressure washed first before we did the brick mortar wash on top!

Did We Wash the Interior Brick of Our Home?

No!  I actually love the color of the brick in our entry way, on the accent wall in our Master Bedroom as well as in Grant’s man cave.  Everything else in our home is super light, bright, neutral and white, so I didn’t want to overdo it inside.

What Is The Cost of This Process?

It depends on the size of your project.  Feel free to contact Frankie for a personal price quote.  He has done tons of projects for Grant over the years.  Grant has built almost 30 homes now!

Are We Glad We Washed Our Home?

1000000% Yes!  Even Grant says he likes it more now than before!
